Bro. Devin Johnson
Bro. Devin Johnson is currently a junior at MIT studying Aerospace Engineering, with a concentration in Space Exploration and a minor in Physics. Aiming to eventually work at NASA and work on advancing the space frontier, Bro. Johnson works diligently in and out of the classroom to achieve his goals. He has completed an internship at Collins Aerospace, conducted research with many MIT professors, taught physics to incoming freshmen through the MIT Interphase EDGE program, and more. Bro. Johnson is also dedicated to helping others and giving back, as becoming a student leader and active member of his community is now an integral part of his character. Coming from a majority Black community in Brooklyn for all his life, attending a PWI was an interesting change for him, but as soon as he arrived on campus, he knew he wanted to spend his time and efforts supporting and growing the Black community there. In his years at MIT thus far, Bro. Johnson has served on the executive boards of the MIT Black Students’ Union, Chocolate City, the MIT 2022 Class Council, MIT Caribbean Club, and is still involved with many more.
In Fall 2020, Bro. Johnson was initiated into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., via Beta Alpha Chapter. Bro. Johnson chose Sigma because of its commitment to the community:
Growing up I always knew about Greek organizations, specifically Sigma seeing as how a good number of my family members were in them. I knew about the things that Phi Beta Sigma did for the community, went to some of the events and celebrations they had, yet I never thought too deeply about what they meant, to the outside world nor to the members themselves. However, upon getting to college and finding a sense of purpose in service and giving back to the community, and with meeting the right people, I began to understand. It dawned on me that Sigma men did the things they did, and acted the way they acted, because they are deeply dedicated to doing all that they can for others. Learning more about the values and principles that the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. held close in their hearts and in their minds, I knew that this was a community where I could not only grow and achieve my goals, but help others do the same.
