Bro. Kenneth B. Canty
Bro. Canty is a civil engineer and entrepreneur. He was initiated in Phi Beta Sigma in 1995. After graduating from U. Mass Amherst in 1997, Bro. Canty bravely took on the challenge of complex engineering projects. Bro. Canty's first experience was working on Boston’s Big Dig. This world-famous project accomplished several major feats; placing the entire I-93 corridor running through downtown Boston underground, replacing it with green space and commercial space above it, and building a new underwater tunnel to Logan International Airport. With this major accomplishment in his portfolio, Bro. Canty opened his own civil engineering and construction firm performing such complex tasks as overwater demolition, among other services, for state and federal customers. Bro. Canty’s entities would grow to have a footprint along the Eastern seaboard of the United States and overseas.
Bro. Canty notes that the road was not always smooth, but that he has learned valuable lessons along the way:
“I have had some of the most rewarding experiences as a business owner, but as with anything in life, with great joy can come great heartbreak as well. Things don’t always work out, however, you can always pick up and start over when it makes sense. I have successfully done this multiple times, and the biggest lesson that I can pass on to you is to become successful quietly. So you don’t tip off potential competitors. Today my businesses have a presence in Boston, Charleston, Savannah, and Bulgaria.”
Today, Bro. Canty is the Chief Executive Officer and President of three civil engineering and construction firms: JANUS - Resilient Infrastructure Demolition, Inc., Atlantic Meridian Contracting Corp., and Freeland Construction Company, Inc.
