Bro. Kyumon Murrell
Brother Kyumon Murrell is a Philanthropic Advisor at ABFE, a philanthropic support organization dedicated to promoting responsive philanthropy in Black communities. Bro. Murrell plans to pursue a career where he can expose the link between racism, health, and disinvestment more clearly, and develop partnerships with people and organizations dedicated to closing the philanthropic funding gap.
Bro. Murrell began working at AFBE in 2019 after graduating from Northeastern University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Services. He was introduced to philanthropy through his internship at the New York State Health Foundation where he worked within the Building Healthy Communities programmatic area. At NYSHealth, he used mapping software to conduct an impact analysis on NYSHealth’s grants and subsequent outcomes. It was there that he realized that philanthropy can be a phenomenal vehicle to place resources in the hands of those who have been historically marginalized.
Brother Murrell became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, Beta Alpha Chapter in Fall 2016 at Northeastern University. Before joining Beta Alpha, he was involved with “Big Brother, Big Sister,” and served on the executive board of Northeastern’s Black Student Association. At Northeastern, he also founded a men’s affinity group, FAM, for Black men. Bro. Murrell was attracted to Phi Beta Sigma because he felt an affinity with its Brothers who toil to live by its motto, “Culture for Service, Service for Humanity.” Seeing initiatives such as “Sigma Wellness” and the organization’s long-standing partnership with the March of Dimes, he felt a perfect fit given his interest in eradicating health inequities.
