Bros. Alain Leroy Locke and Thomas Montgomery Gergory
Many know that Bro. Locke was the first Black Rhodes Scholar. Brother Locke was a Harvard man, too, where he graduated with a degree in English and Philosophy. Spring 1915 he would be initiated into Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., via Alpha Chapter along with Bro. T. Montgomery Gregory, another Harvard man. Both were serving as faculty at Howard University at this time. Together in 1921 at Howard University, they founded an influential program in acting, playwriting, and theatrical production, offering the first institutionalized training for black writers and performers in the United States. In 1924 they founded The Stylus Literary Society as Howard University, as well. An organization dedicated to original composition in art, literature, and music. Bro. Gregory would continue to be a driving force for Black Theater, becoming a leading figure in the National Negro Theater Movement.
