US Army Major David Smith (Ret) earned the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in 2020.  MAJ Smith is originally from Bedford, Massachusetts, like Phi Beta Sigma’s Honorable Founder Leonard F. Morse. In 1996, as the #1 on his line, he proudly earned initiation through Sigma’s Beta Alpha Chapter, becoming a Brother of the most elite fraternity in the world.  In 1998, he graduated from Northeastern University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  After his football career ended, he decided that he needed to pursue a career with purpose and enlisted in the United States Army in 1999, following in his father’s footsteps.  After the Army recognized that he could be a greater asset in another role, he was commissioned as an officer in 2001, becoming one of the distinguished 18%.  He completed three combat deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq during the Global War on Terrorism, held the line between North Korea and South Korea with US Forces Korea, and served on peacekeeping missions with the United Nations in South Sudan.  For meritorious service, he earned one of the Army’s top honors, a Bronze Star, for his meritorious actions.  In 2020, he retired as an Army Major with 21 years of faithful service to his country.
