Bro. Marcus Daly
Brother Marcus Daly is an 18-year Service Representative for Verizon Communications where he has worked in several different capacities in Verizon’s Sales and Service Department. During that time, Bro. Daly has earned multiple commendations for sales, such as Platinum and Diamond Club status. Notwithstanding the commendations for excellence, Bro. Daly is most proud of his 16-year involvement as a union steward within the Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1400. For the last 10 years, Bro. Daly has served as chief steward overseeing up to 175 representatives at any given time. Notably, he is the only African American serving at this level in New England and has been unanimously elected twice for the chief steward position to represent all union members. In addition, Bro. Daly is also one of the charter members of the New England CWA’s Legislative Political Action Team (LPAT) which was founded “to better articulate union members' priorities to politicians through bills and legislation.” Bro. Daly believes that his advocacy for his union brothers stems from the leadership skills that he has built as a Brother and elected leader within Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Bro. Daly was initiated into the Beta Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in the Spring of 1995.
As a steward, Bro. Daly has the unique position of being both an employee of Verizon and a labor union official. In this role, he must navigate the politics of both the workforce and the corporation as he seeks to represent and defend the interests of his fellow employees. To accomplish this task, Bro. Daly organizes the labor force around the principles of teamwork and unity to ensure that they move in concert together, and attract more workers to engage in the fight for workers’ rights. During the 2020 election cycle, his efforts included organizing volunteers to provide volunteer advocacy services for labor-friendly candidates.
Bro. Daly shares:
… that efforts of labor rights activists like, Sigma Bro. A. Philip Randolph, are what delivers a living wage, benefits, a 5-day work week, and paid time off. This fight never ends as corporate giants and their quest to drive profits often challenge the interests of labor. Political-organizing know-how, charisma, and strength are required to build a brotherhood of men willing to band together and fight for a common cause. These are skills I learned in becoming a ‘Sigma Man’ and have honed as I’ve served as Sigma’s Director of New England and as an elected Board Member upon its Eastern Regional Board.
Bro. Daly continues to heed the call of Phi Beta Sigma’s motto: “Culture for service, and service for humanity.” In order to serve as an agent of change within his native city of Boston, Bro. Daly co-chartered Omicron Chi Sigma Chapter (The Suffolk County Alumni Chapter) and is currently still serving as the New England State Director.
